How to Make Your Bucketlist a Reality

How many times have you talked about visiting Italy,  Greece or snorkeling in Indonesia but never actually plan a trip?  It’s so easy to day dream but so difficult to, actually “do”.  We all have excuses and self limiting beliefs for why we can never accomplish these dreams.  Below I will share actionable steps that will help you make your dreams a reality.

How to Create a Bucket list?

An effective bucket list contains experiences, achievements or goals that a you want to have or accomplish during your lifetime.  Here are three ways to categorize your goals:

  • Where I want to go?
  • What I want to do?
  • Things I’d like to achieve?

I LOVE this quote, “Set a goal so  big that you can’t achieve it until you grow into the person who can.”  It’s so good, right? and a great reminder to dream big audacious dreams! A bucket list contains dreams we want to accomplish in a lifetime, not necessarily at this very moment.

Visualize Your Dreams

“Visualize the thing you want.  See it, feel it, believe it.  Make your mental blue print and begin.” -Robert Collier

Create a vision board with images that represent specific details of what you want to achieve (dream vacation) and look at it daily.  Ideally first thing in the morning  and in the evening before bedtime. This is how the magic happens, since you essentially end up doing short visualization exercises throughout the day.

Set Actionable Goals

Come up with a plan that will help you achieve each goal and the break it down into smaller goals.  For example, if this dream vacation is going to cost you 10,000, figure out how much you will need to save a month to reach that goal.  You will be able to determine by what age or date you will be able to achieve your goals.  So, if you save $100/a month you will be able to take this dream vacation in eight years. Don’t let the amount of time that it’s going to take discourage you.  The time is going to pass anyway, right?!

Anticipate Obstacles a.k.a. self limiting beliefs & Overcome Them

What is a limiting belief?

A limiting belief is something you subconsciously believe to be true about yourself or others. Anything you say to yourself to justify why it isn’t or won’t work out for you is a limiting belief. The key word here is subconsciously, we many not even realize that deep down, these beliefs are ingrained in us and are holding us back from achieving our dreams.

Here are some limiting beliefs that may come up in this scenario:

“I will never be able to save.”,  “I am terrible with money.”,  “Our schedules are too busy.”,  “We can’t afford it.”

Here is how you can release yourself from limiting beliefs:

  1. Identify your limiting belief(s) and write them down.
  2. Acknowledge it for what it is, a belief- not a fact.
  3. Create empowering beliefs. To form this new belief, start off with ” I AM_____” then fill in blank.
  4. Daily practice. Everyday think about your new belief(s), say them out loud
    “I am…”
  5. Most importantly, visualize (engage all your senses), see it in your mind as if it is your reality and really feel (excitement, proud, relief, love) what that reality will feel like. Visualization is SO powerful. So many athletes and success people use this proven technique.
  6. Rinse and repeat
