Looking for an easy and tasty Valentine’s Day Craft? Tasty craft?? Yes, hand crafted heart tortilla chips! A big part of our kindergarten homeschool curriculum is cooking/baking our daily snack. For today’s snack, I wanted something festive, yet simple and that could be made out of tortillas. Not random at all, right? I remembered I had picked up some heart shaped cookie cutters, a few weeks ago and thought they would be perfect to to make heart shaped tortilla chips with!
Since we make tortillas weekly, I already had some masa on hand and we just used the recipe on the bag.
Ingredients
- 2 cups Organic Masa Harina
- 1/2 tsp Sea Salt
- 1 1/2-2 cups Hot Water *start slow; don’t dump all the water in. I took one for the team, tried this and it didn’t work! Add it in slowly, until you reach the right consistency. The ideal consistency of the dough, is very similar to playdough and therefore lends itself beautifully to cut out into shapes. If it’s too wet just add more masa and vice versa.
Instructions
- Mix salt into the masa harina corn flour. Pour the water into the dough to get a good consistency. The dough should be firm and springy when touched, not dry or sticky. Let rest for about an hour, covered with a damp towel *We skip the resting portion and they always turn out fine.
- Preheat a griddle or flat surface. Divide the dough into 2-inch balls. Press dough between two pieces of waxed paper, or flatten according to a tortilla press directions, into 6-inch circles. Place flattened dough on a hot griddle or flat surface and cook until the top of the tortilla starts to look cooked, about 1 minute. Flip to the other side and heat for another minute. *Cut into shapes after you flatten
Since the consistency of the dough is like playdough, Weston had the best time rolling the dough, flattening it and cutting out different sized hearts. Its a fun seasonal craft that you can eat! Double whammy = Mom Win!
Another mom win is that you can just use store bought corn tortillas and have your kiddos cut them with the cookie cutters. Then all you’ll need to do is fry them. We served ours with black beans.
